Europe needs a new policy on Iran - one which actively engages the Iranian people who are longing for genuine change, 30 years after Ayatollah Khomeini brought a reign of terror under the banner of fundamentalist Islam. Europa trenger en ny policy over Iran - en som aktivt engasjerer  den iranske folket som  lengter etter ekte endring, 30 år etter  atAyatollah Khomeini tok en Reign of terror under banneret av fundamentalistisk islam.

Today, Iranians are perhaps the most pro-Western population in the Middle East. I dag Iranere er kanskje den mest pro-vestlige befolkningen i Midtøsten. But for the past eight years, the European Union has done a great injustice towards the people of Iran and the possibility of engaging Iranian society. Men i de siste åtte årene, EU har gjort en stor urett mot befolkningen i Iran og  begrenset deres mulighet til å engasjere  seg i  det iranske samfunnet.

The EU blacklisted the main Iranian Resistance group, the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), in 2002. EU svartelistet hoved iranske Resistance gruppen Folkets Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), i 2002. The group, which was the first to reveal the regime's nuclear weapons sites in 2002, has by far proven to be the force most feared by the mullahs. Gruppen, som var den første til å avsløre regimet  atomvåpen planer i 2002, har langt vist seg å være  den styrken som  mest fryktes av mullahene i Iran. Still, EU officials have conceded that they banned the group at the behest of Tehran and in order to win economic contracts from the ruling mullahcracy. Likevel, EU tjenestemenn har innrømmet at de forbudte gruppen etter  et ønske fra Teheran,  for å vinne økonomiske kontrakter fra den herskende mullahcracy.

For years, the labelling of the PMOI as a terrorist group had a crippling effect on the movement for change within Iran. I de årene som  PMOI  markert som en terroristgruppe hadde denne en hindrende effekt på endrings bevegelen innenfor Iran. The young population was left to feel that they were alone in their struggle for freedom. Den unge befolkningen  i Iran ble igjen skuffet og følte at de var alene i deres kamp for frihet. Iranian Revolutionary Guards stepped up killings of political prisoners under the guise of 'executing terrorists'. Iranske revolusjonære Guards trappet opp drapene på politiske fanger under dekke av 'henrettelsen av terrorister. However, in recent times, nowhere has the blacklisting of the PMOI been more profoundly felt than in Camp Ashraf, in Iraq's Diyala province, where some 4,000 members of the group have been targeted by pro-Iranian elements within Iraq's fledgling multi-tier administration. Men i det siste, ingensteds har svartelisting av PMOI vært dypt følt enn i Camp Ashraf, i Iraks Diyala-provinsen, der noen 4000 medlemmer av gruppen har vært målrettet  angrepet av pro-iranske elementer innen Iraks  multi-tier administrasjon.

Tehran has mobilised all its resources to force the Iraqi Government to close down Ashraf and expel PMOI members, preferably to Iran, using the terrorist tag as a justification. Tehran har mobilisert alle sine ressurser til å styrke den irakiske regjeringen å legge ned Ashraf og fordrive PMOI medlemmer, fortrinnsvis til Iran, bruke terrorist-koden som begrunnelse.

Fortunately, in January, the EU finally lifted the 'perverse' ban on the PMOI after being ordered to do so by the European Court of Justice. Heldigvis, i januar, EU endelig løftet de "perverse" forbudet mot PMOI etter at de er pålagt å gjøre det ved European Court of Justice. Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi said that with the de-listing of the PMOI, the core of Europe's policy of appeasement towards Tehran was crushed and the strategic investment by the regime to destroy the Iranian Resistance was lost. Iranske opposisjonen leder Maryam Rajavi sagt at med de-oppføringen av PMOI, kjernen av Europas appeasement politikk  mot Teheran ble klemt og strategisk investering av regimet til å ødelegge de iranske Resistance ble brutt. "The winds of change will blow with greater momentum for democratic change in Iran", she said, quite rightly. "Endring vinden vil blåse med større fart for demokratisk forandring i Iran", sa hun, ganske riktig.

Alas, Europe now has a momentous opportunity to mend fences with the Iranian people and show them that it is truly on the side of democrats rather than their oppressors. Alas, Europa har nå en gang mulighet til å reparere gjerder med det iranske folk og vise dem at Europa står ved siden av demokratene i Iran enn iranerenes undertrykker.

Most critically, the 27-nation bloc must compensate for its past wrongs against the Iranian Resistance which have over the years emboldened the Tehran regime in its pursuit of nuclear weapons with which to hold us all ransom. Mest kritisk, den 27-nasjon blokken må kompensere for sin fortid feil gjort mot iranske Resistance som har i  årevis avslørt   Teheran-regimets  kjernefysiske program i sin  jakt etter kjernefysiske våpen i Iran. Noe som kan brukes til å holde oss alle i ro.

The EU should now urge the Iraqi government to end Iranian-dictated pressure against the group. EU skal nå oppfordre den irakiske regjeringen å avslutte iransk-diktert presset mot gruppen.

Remarks by Iraq's National Security Adviser, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie, that PMOI members will be extradited to Iran next month must be condemned. Bemerkning av Iraks nasjonale sikkerhetsrådgiver, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie at PMOI medlemmer vil bli tvangsendt til Iran neste måned må være dømt. PMOI members have lived in Iraq lawfully for more than two decades and have been recognised by the US Government as "protected persons" under the Fourth Geneva Convention. PMOI medlemmer har levd i Irak lovlig for mer enn to tiår og har blitt anerkjent av den amerikanske regjeringen som "beskyttede personer" under den fjerde Genève-konvensjonen. As such, and according to the principle of non-refoulement, attempts to extradite or forcefully displace PMOI from Ashraf would be a violation of international law and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Som sådan, og i henhold til prinsippet om non-refoulement, forsøker å utlevere eller tvangplassere PMOI fra Ashraf ville være et brudd på folkeretten og internasjonal humanitær lov (IHL).

On the other hand, some 5.2 million Iraqis and at least 3 million Iraqi Shiites have signed statements declaring their support for the PMOI's presence in Iraq as the strategic counter-balance to the Iranian regime's meddling in their country. På den annen side, noe 5.2 millioner irakere og minst 3 millioner Iraqi Shiites har signert erklæringene erklærte sin støtte til PMOI tilstedeværelse i Irak som den strategiske mot balanse til det iranske regimet er innblanding i deres land. The group also enjoys vast support among Parliamentarians across Europe, the US and much of the Arab world. Gruppen også nyter enorm støtte blant parlamentarikere over hele Europa, USA og mye av den arabiske verden.

More importantly, however, the group has the impassionate backing of Iranian students in university campuses in Tehran, Tabriz and Shiraz. Enda viktigere er imidlertid gruppen får rygg dekke av de iranske studenter i universitetets studiesteder i Teheran, Tabriz og Shiraz. Thirty years on from the founding of the Islamic Republic, the Iranian people are reaching out to Europe for solidarity. Tretti år senere fra grunnleggelsen av den islamske republikk, den iranske folk ber av Europa  solidaritet. Our EU leaders should extend a hand. Våre EU-lederne skal strekke en hånd.
